Electrical service has evolved significantly over the decades.

Today: 100- and 200-amp services are common in residential homes
This means that an older home may still have an electrical system that was perfectly adequate when it was built, but may have less capacity than a modern household needs today.
How Do You Know How Many Amps Your Home Has?
Start by checking your electrical panel. The main breaker will typically indicate the service size, such as 100A or 200A.
However, the number on the breaker isn't always enough to determine your home's full electrical capacity. The panel, meter, service conductors and other components all need to work together.

Is 100 Amp Service Enough?
It can be! A 100-amp service may be completely suitable for a home with relatively modest electrical demands.
The question is what you're powering, and what you plan to add.
You may want to have your electrical service assessed if you're:
Adding a heat pump or air conditioning
Installing a hot tub
Adding major appliances
Renovating or expanding your home
Planning several electrical upgrades
You may also notice signs such as frequently tripping breakers, flickering lights when large appliances turn on, or difficulty adding new electrical equipment.
These don't automatically mean you need 200 amps, but they're good reasons to have your system evaluated.
100 Amps vs. 200 Amps: What's the Difference?
The biggest difference is capacity.
A 100-amp service can work well for many homes, while a 200-amp service provides more room for multiple high-demand appliances and future upgrades.
Think about everything your home may need to power:
EV charger + heat pump + hot tub + electric appliances + everything else.
The goal isn't necessarily to have the biggest electrical service possible. It's about having enough capacity for your home's current needs and future plans.
What About Older Vancouver Homes?
This is especially worth considering if you live in an older home in Vancouver or the Lower Mainland.
Before buying an older home or starting a major renovation, it's worth understanding what you're working with. An electrical system that has been in place for decades may need some upgrades to support the way you use the home today.
And a renovation is often the perfect time to address electrical capacity before new walls, finishes and fixtures go in.

Going from 100 to 200 amps isn't simply a matter of swapping out a panel. Depending on the property, a service upgrade can involve new equipment, wiring, trenching, utility coordination and more.
